BASEBALL: Here is more from Friday night's State Playoff doubleheader at Franklin County.

The Phoenix Baseball team's record setting season came to an end in the first round of the state tournament.  After making the nearly 3 hour trip to Franklin County, the Phoenix were greeted with rain, wind, cool weather, and a one hour game delay.  And though Sonoraville lost both games (the second one in extra innings), the experience of their first state tournament will be valuable moving forward.

Three seniors will be moving on; Thomas Worsham, Chris Baker, and Matthew Sollicito.  Each provided and important role for this year's team, and were all vital parts of Sonoraville's overall success.  However, 11 players will be returning, including 7 starters, so the future looks bright.

Typically, on a season ending write up, we like to focus on the team as a whole and not really get into the individual stats of the last game.  An exception will be made with this one.  Senior Thomas Worsham gave what many thought was his best pitching performance of his high school career. In game 2, he pitched all 9 innings, and after 7 innings of play (a full game in high school), none of the runs allowed were earned.  He had complete control of the mound, and was able to keep a very good hitting team guessing all night.  With the Phoenix already nursing some crucial injuries which really restricted their pitching options, he gave them exactly what they needed to compete and have a chance to win.

Thanks to all the players, coaches, and fans for the dedication and support throughout the season.  It's one that will be remembered by the Phoenix nation, and historically, will always reflect as the first season Sonoraville baseball finished with a winning record overall at 14-12, a winning record in region at 8-6, and their trip to the state tournament.  The team should feel proud, and they deserve our thanks and congratulations.

BASKETBALL:  From Coach Caudell-  This year SHS had two young ladies honored as Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State Selections for basketball.  Senior, Payton Smith, and junior, Carrie Cheeks, were both named to the North All-State team for AAA.  This is a huge honor, and it’s really exciting to have 2 players named to the team.  Please congratulate these girls if you see them today!

Here is the roster for all of this year’s All-state selections:

If you weren’t already aware, Carrie was also named Atlanta Journal-Constitution 2nd team all-state and Chattanooga Times Free Press All-Area for this season.

Tough but Proud Night For The Phoenix!

It was one of the biggest days in Phoenix Sports history as we had both our Boys Soccer team and our Phoenix Baseball team in action in the State Playoffs.  Though neither team won, it was still a night to be proud of!

On the soccer front, Coach Palazzolo's boys fought hard as the #4 seed and lost to Region 8-AAA #1 seed North Oconee 2-1.  The Titans have a terrific program and for us to go over there and battle them like we did is fantastic.  Dakota French had the lone goal for the Phoenix, who finish the season at 10-7.

In Franklin County, our boys of Summer lost a double header to the Lions, ending our season.  Franklin County won the 1st game 10-0 but in true Phoenix fashion we never gave up and took the Lions to extra innings in the night cap before falling 7-5 in 9 innings.  I'll have more details about the two games later.  Coach Walraven's squad finish the season at 14-12.

Congrats to both Phoenix teams for incredible seasons and for making history with their first ever trips to the State Playoffs!  Combined with our Boys & Girls Tennis programs, who also made their first trips to state, it has been a banner Spring in the Phoenix Nation!!

Phoenix Baseball History!!

In a year full of state tournament qualifiers throughout the Phoenix Nation, it's only fitting that the baseball team add themselves to the list.

For the 1st time in school history, Sonoraville baseball is headed to the state tournament, where they will open up at Franklin County next Friday in a best 2 out of 3 series.  The Phoenix are the #3 seed from Region 5-AAA.

Going into Thursday's game vs. North Murray, the Phoenix knew their situation.  A loss would mean an end to a successful season.  However, some solid pitching from Drew Wilson and timely hitting, led by Thomas Worsham, made it apparent early that these boys were not going to succumb to the pressure, beating the Mountaineers 7-4.

Wilson pitched a complete game 4 hitter, allowing only 2 earned runs, while striking out 8.  Wilson finishes the regular season with a 1.17 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 59.2 innings of work (both of which are most likely school records).

Worsham provided the leadership at the plate, doing exactly what a senior should do; come up big in a big game.  Worsham finished going 2 for 3 with two doubles and 3 RBI's.  Zack Sellman had a huge 2 out, two RBI single in the bottom of the 1st.  Brandon Dendy was a perfect 2-2, and scored 3 runs.  Patrick Thurman, Thad Harris, and Clark Johnson each contributed a hit, also.

Sonoraville finishes the regular season with a 14-10 record (most in school history, and first ever winning season), and they finish with an 8-6 region record (records, also).  However, don't think for one minute that the boys are satisfied with just making it to state.  They plan on going to Franklin County and winning!  Congrats to Coach Walraven, Coach Hayes and all the boys!!

SOCCER: The Phoenix Boys Soccer team is headed to the AAA State Playoffs for the first time in school history.  Unfortunately, our Lady Phoenix are not and their season came to an end on Tuesday at Cartersville.  Coach McGuire had these comments on the completion of the 2013 season: “I am extremely proud of my girls this year.  We may not have had the results we wanted on the scoreboard every game, but my girls gave every practice and game their all and that is what I ask of them.  Due to their hard work and senior leadership, we improved over the season as a team.  We also worked with the boys and girls club, raised money for the tornado victims, and raised money to help fight breast cancer.  The team and I appreciate the dedication and leadership of our seniors and will miss each of them.”
