The Good, The Bad & The Phoenix

Plenty going on in the Phoenix Nation on this last Saturday of January.  Lets check it out……..

SMS Hoop: Coach Fox and our SMS Varsity Girls fell in the BGMSAA Championship to the dreaded Houn, 31-27, at Ashworth Middle on Saturday. There was a huge crowd for this crosstown battle, which was the 3rd one of the season between the Yellow Jackets & Phoenix.  Both teams won on their home court so it was fitting that the rubber game was on neutral ground.

It was a tough start for the Phoenix as we fell behind 12-1 by the end of the 1st quarter.  But with 1 minute left in the 2nd quarter, we had cut it to 14-11.  However, that final minute would be disastrous as we gave up 6 quick points and found ourselves down 20-11 at the half.  The deficit would grow to 22-11 before the Lady Phoenix would start the comeback in the 3rd.  We would get as close as 27-25 with 2 minutes left in the game when Taryn Hickey drilled 2 free-throws.  Unfortunately, we just couldn't get any closer and ultimately fell by 4.

The Phoenix finish the season 15-3, and have nothing to be ashamed of.  I give Coach Fox a lot of credit for never panicking, despite the big early deficit and terribly poor start by his squad.  The Phoenix Nation crowd was in full force which was nice to see.

BASKETBALL: The Phoenix hosted the Wolves of North Paulding(AAA) at The Inferno on Saturday afternoon.  It was Student Appreciation Day, with any and all students, not just SHS students, getting into the game for free.

Varsity Girls: Won 61-37.  The Lady Phoenix won their 5th straight, and 4 of those 5 victories have come rather handily.  Coach Caudell and her Girls are now 17-5 on the season with just 3 regular season games left.

Varsity Boys: Won 53-47.  The Phoenix have their first 3 game winning streak of the season and improve to 8-14 on the year.

The gang is back in action, and home again, on Tuesday when we host North Murray at The Inferno.  The JV Girls tip-off the action at 4:30pm.  Friday will be Senior Night when we face Chattooga.  Lets pack The Inferno for our Seniors!

FIREBIRDSCoach Hamilton & Coach Smith took the Firebirds over to Pickens County HS for the Burnt Mountain Classic.  Senior Bricen Romine(right) and junior Cody Kuhn(left) each went 4-0 and won their weight class championship!  Congrats to Bricen & Cody!  Sophomore Alex Hurtiz(center) went 3-2 and finished 4th.

The Firebirds hit the mat again on Friday at Rockmart for the Area Traditionals.

Clean Sweep for the Good Guys!

The Basketball season is slowly coming to a close for the Phoenix, with only 4 regular season games left after Friday night's travels to Coahulla Creek, and the Phoenix still have many goals left to obtain.  Tonight saw the Phoenix sweep the Colts, bringing their overall season record verse Coahulla Creek to  7-0 after also sweeping them at The Inferno back on January 3rd.

JV Girls: W 43-32.  Erin Schueman led the way with 8 points, while Katie Wells had 7.  The victory increased Coach Beemon & Coach Smith's record to 10-4 on the season.

JV Boys: Won 47-38.  Freshmen Drew Wilson & Shane Dickey each had 14 points in the win, which was the 7th of the season for Coach Martin's boys.

Varsity Girls: Won 68-31.  The victory was the 16th of the season(5 losses) and was led by sophomore Carrie Cheeks double-double as she had 12 points & 13 rebounds.  Jennilee Gentry had a game high 24 points.  Payton Smith had 8 points & 8 assists.  Kailey Vaughn had 15 rebounds.

Varsity Boys: Won 72-35.  Coach Mashburn's squad has won 2 in a row and stands at 7-14 on the campaign.

The Varsity Boys & Girls are back in action on Saturday at The Inferno as we host North Paulding in the make up game from December 22nd, when the games were canceled due to inclement weather.  The Girls will tip at 3pm with the Boys to follow.

A reminder that our SMS Girls Varsity team is in the BGMSAA Championship at 12:30pm on Saturday at Ashworth verse Calhoun.  Coach Fox' Girls are the #2 seed and 15-2 overall.  Calhoun is the #1 seed.

TRACK & FIELD: Coach McDaris' and the Phoenix Track & Field team started official practice this past Monday, January 23rd, and this coming Monday, January 30th, they will have Spirit Night at Dairy Queen from 5pm-8pm.  Please go out and support our Calhoun Dairy Queen and your Phoenix!

Girls’ Hoop is Strong in the Phoenix Nation

There is one thing for certain this Winter in the Phoenix Nation.  And that is the fact that both our SHS & SMS Girls' hoop programs are stellar!

Coach Caudell and the SHS Lady Phoenix are 15-5 thus far, including a win over Top 10 and previously unbeaten Dade County.

Coach BeemonCoach Smith and the SHS JV Lady Phoenix are a healthy 9-4.

Wednesday night, the success only continued as Coach Fox and the SMS Varsity Girls, the #2 seed, advanced to the BGMSAA Tournament Championship with a 37-28 victory over Cartersville, the #3 seed.  The tournament started on Saturday and is being hosted by Ashworth.  Our JV Girls and both Boys teams have already been eliminated.  The victory, the 15th verse only 2 losses, earned the Lady Phoenix yet another shot to take on their cross town rival Calhoun, the #1 seed.  The 2 teams split their regular season meetings with both winning on their home court in nail biters.  Saturday's Championship will be at 12:30pm.  In Wednesday night's victory over the Hurricanes, Taryn Hickey led the way with 11 points, while Evie Delp had 9 and Becca Cheeks has 8.  Good luck Saturday to our young Lady Phoenix!

Go Phoenix!!

Senior Night for the Firebirds

Greetings & Salutations Phoenix Nation!  Big night for our Hoopsters & Firebirds as both seasons start to wind down a bit.

WRESTLING: The Firebirds said good-bye to 2 of our best & brightest Tuesday night as they hosted SE Whitfield, GC & Ringgold in Senior Night festivities at The InfernoLayson West & Bricen Romine wrestled for the final time at home, and as always they impressed.  Both Layson & Bricen went 3-0 on the night. Unfortunately, Coach Hamilton & the Firebirds did not fair as well as we only went 1-2 on the night.  We beat Ringgold 41-25 before falling to SE Whitfield and GC.

The Firebirds are back on the mat this weekend as the Varsity will take part in the Pickens County tournament on Friday & Saturday.

BASKETBALL:  The Phoenix hit the road for the 2nd of three straight road games, this time traveling over to LFO, where we got a sweep of the Warriors.

JV Boys: Won 51-40.  Patrick Thurman led the way with 15 points, including going 10-10 from the free-throw line.  Drew Wilson had 12 points.  The win pushes Coach Martin's boys to 6-8 on the season.

Varsity Girls: Won 63-32.  It was an all around team effort as 10 of the 14 Lady Phoenix players scored.  Carrie Cheeks led the way with 13 points & 6 rebounds.  Payton Smith had 9 points, 5 assists & 5 steals.  Jennilee Gentry had 8 points & 4 assists.  Heather Vess shot 3-3 from behind the arc for 9 points.  The victory increased Coach Caudell's Lady Phoenix record to 15-5

Varsity Boys: Won 69-55 for their 6th win of the season.  This was the 3rd time the Warriors & Phoenix met this season.  After losing the 1st game back in mid-December at The Inferno, Coach Mashburn's boys have won the last 2 verse the Warriors.  Besides the home & home series, these 2 teams met in the LaFayette Holiday Tournament between Christmas & New Years.

The Phoenix complete this 3 game road trip on Friday when they travel to Coahulla Creek before returning to The Inferno on Saturday to face North Paulding.

SMS Hoop: Coach Jones and his JV Boys were down the road at GC for their 2nd Round match-up with Cartersville in the 2012 BGMSAA.  Unfortunately, the season ended for the young Phoenix as they fell to the Hurricanes, 49-39.  Will Walraven led with 10 points, while Tristen Key & Hayden Bunch each had 9.  The loss puts their final record at 9-8.

The JV Girls, JV Boys & Varsity Boys are all out of the tournament now, leaving only Coach Fox's Varsity Girls.  They continue play Wednesday at Ashworth at 5:45pm verse Cartersville, a team they split with this season.

Big Day for SMS Phoenix!

Saturday was the start of the BGMSAA Basketball Tournament as well as the League Duals for our Firebirds.  It was a pretty nice day for the Phoenix Nation's younger athletes.  Lets check it out.

SMS WRESTLING: Coach Bowers, as he has done all season, was nice enough to file this story for me.

"On Saturday, the wrestling team traveled to Calhoun to compete in the League Duals tournament.  The Firebirds started the day off the day defeating Hurricanes of Cartersville 77-18.

The second match of the day was not a good one for the Firebirds.  Woodland came out strong, and the Firebirds did not.  The Wildcats outscored the Firebirds 58-39.  This would be the teams only loss on the day.

This loss would help the Firebirds get a little more motivated for the rest of the day.  The Firebirds then faced the South Central Chieftains, and picked up the second win of the day 76-24.

In the consolation finals the Firebirds had to face the Calhoun Yellow Jackets for the third time this season.  The match was another barn burner between Calhoun and Sonoraville.  Once again, the final outcome would come down to Jaccob Bagwell's match to decide the final outcome of the match.  In one of the most athletic matches of the day, Bagwell outscored his opponent 11-3, which gave the Firebirds the 3rd place victory over Calhoun, 47-42.

Posting 4-0 records for the Firebirds were Hunter Quinn(103) and Jaccob Bagwell.  Bagwell is in the 215 weight class, but wrestled 285 weight class all day.

3-1 records went to: Gavin Thompson(70)….Gage Nicholson(85)….Morgan Holt(110)….Elijah Geronimo(118)….CJ Corley(132)….Kevin Hurtiz(170)….Dakota Allen(189)….Skyler Wheaton.  Wheaton is at the 189 weight class, but wrestled at the 215 weight class all day."

SMS BASKETBALL: The single elimination tournament had our Boys teams playing at GC and our Girls teams playing at Ashworth, who is hosting this year's tournament.

JV Girls: Won 19-16 to advance to Monday's game against Cartersville.  Cortney Williams had 6 points while Kaytlyn Podein chipped in 5.  The JV Girls, the 3rd seed in the tournament, now stand at 10-5 overall.  They'll tip things off with the Hurricanes at 5:45pm.

JV Boys: Won 45-40 in Overtime over Cass!  Hayden Bunch had 15 points and Will Walraven had 14.  The win advances Coach Jones' team to Tuesday's game against Cartersville.  Tip-off set for 4:30pm.  The JV Boys, the 5th seed in the tourney, improve to 9-7 overall.

Varsity Girls: Won 40-25.  Becca Cheeks led the way scoring 20 points!  Their record improves to an outstanding 14-2 overall as they advance to Wednesday's game against Cartersville at 5:45pm.  The Lady Phoenix are the 2nd seed in the tournament.

Varsity Boys: Lost 27-25 to Adairsville.  The loss ends the season for Coach Evelti's boys, who finish the campaign at an even 8-8.

Many a Dairy Queen Birthday wish to send out in the Phoenix Nation.  Friday was sophomore Volleyball & Basketball player Bre Horner's 16th Birthday.  Happy Sweet 16 Bre!

Saturday was freshman Football & Baseball player Clark Johnson's 15th birthday.  It was also the 18th Birthday for 2 Phoenix seniors: Lady Phoenix Basketball player Kristina Cunningham as well as Football & Baseball player Dakota Dendy.  Happy Birthday to Bre, Kristina, Clark & Dakota!
